Mimi McGarey
Second Grade Teacher
I am delighted to teach second grade at St. Joseph Catholic School. I look forward to seeing familiar faces and to meeting and welcoming new ones. It is a joy to watch the growth of these children through this academic year.
I was born in Heidelberg, Germany, where my Army officer father and his bride were stationed for three years. I attended Catholic elementary schools in various states as my dad was transferred across the country. When he retired from the Army our family settled in Tucson. I entered St. Joseph as an eighth grader and graduated from St. Joe's! I attended Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, then Arizona State University on a Medallion of Merit scholarship. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Education (BAE) in both Elementary Education and Special Education/Learning Disabilities. I began my teaching career in Laveen, Arizona as a fifth grade teacher. Since then, I have taught in private and public schools in Arizona and California in grades kindergarten through sixth grade. This will be my sixth year teaching at St. Joseph.
I was blessed with three beautiful children and spent their early years at home. They are bright, engaging and talented adults now and remain my greatest joy. Katherine teaches English at St. John’s High School in Shrewsbury, MA. I am especially proud that my daughter is dedicated to the teaching profession. Michael works in San Francisco, California and was married to Rachael Olmanson in September, 2020. She is a delightful blessing to all of us and an elementary teacher. Dominic is a C.P. A. who lives and works in San Francisco. We joke that Dominic owes his success to his third grade teacher; I had the privilege of having Dominic in my class that year!
I enjoy spending time with my parents and extended family in Tucson; I love travel, reading, antiques, old movies, fashion and sports. I am an active member of the Old Pueblo Chapter of the ASU Alumni Association and am a proud and loyal Sun Devil!
I am honored to serve the students of my alma mater St. Joseph and I look forward to a fantastic year. Go, Eagles!
